What is Considered an Anime?

I'm wondering again. They say an anime is a cartoon from Japan, but then I saw something called Pecola.

Looking at it, would you think of it as an anime? Japan/Nippon has it easy. To them, ANY form of animation is an "anime," but in the West, a bit complicated.

Would anime be by how is nomally looks AND it's Japanese origin?

I simply see animation made in Japan as anime and nothing else. There are so many art styles in the medium that you can't really say what is typical. Gankutsuou, Mononoke, Naruto, and Hellsing are all animated in different styles and look very different from one another, but are all anime because they come from the same place of origin: Japan.

Well, generally anything that is produced and animated in Japan generally would fall under what we call "Anime". The exact origin of the word is actually derived from the short way of writing Animation in Japan. However, we adapted to use this term to call anything produced in Japan as "Anime". By logic, everything would be "anime", but as we know it most of the western world, this is not the case.

Now, there is another subject to me that I know that tenRAB to bring up debates. There has been talks about whether or not to consider co-productions "Anime". Some people tend to not consider them such simply because of the involvement of foreign studios. The biggest thing to look at is to see who is writing and directing and just how much control does Japan hold over the animation production aspect. I think, to me, those are the key factors in what I would determine an "Anime" project.

To me, anime is usually classified as something that has its origin from Japan and for the majority part specifically made for a Japanese audience in mind first, and potentially Western audiences second or not at all. That's how I think it anyways. But if you want a more serious answer to what is considered anime...

When it's not quite an Annie, and isn't quite a May, but man... *laughs*

...So to answer your question I don't know.

Yeah, we've had this conversation before.

I was trying to make the argument that anime was based on style and had nothing to do with Japan, but after many back and forth arguments I realized I was wrong and conceded.

Animation from Japan is anime. Simple as that.

Think of it this way:
Champagne can only come from a certain region in France. If it comes from anywhere else, it's sparkling wine.
Theoretically the best bottle of sparkling wine can come from Italy or Napa, but it'd still be considered sparkling wine and not champagne.
