what is biting in the garden....any ideas?

hubby has been bitten & his hand has swollen up so badly....he didn't feel a bite nor hear buzzing....and he didn't see any insects around.

does anybody know what it is that is biting & causing such a nasty reaction.

serious answers much appreciated...thank you.
oh...forgot to say...he was cutting a hedge at the time & this morning he can't even see his knuckles clearly due to the swelling.
 
Walking sticks are known to bite. Also, there are numerous fire ants during the summer as well as horseflies. It can be a multitude of things.
