What is better for the environment?

A thought arouse in my head the other day. Is it better for the environment to use a pen or a pencil? I know that if you use a pen it will be forever in a landfill, but if you use a pencil you are cutting down trees which is also bad. So I just want to know by fact and be weighing out all the pros and cons, tell me which is better.
