It depends on what you carry and how you want to carry it.

I don't use a backpack for a couple of reasons. One: I never put both the straps on and carry it fully on my back. Therefore, a tote is better for me. Also, I find it easier to get my books into, and out of, the tote. I also don't need all the extra pockets in a backpack since I also carry a big purse. (despite my avitar that looks like a guy, I'm a woman.)

I don't need to carry a backpack fully on my back because I don't do much walking around with my stuff. I just go from my car to my classes, and all my classes are pretty close to each other. My tote is also more fashionable/professional looking. I'm kinda too old for a backpack, I have a very pretty leather tote- it goes with my wardrobe.

But if you have long walks and really want to be able to put both straps on, go with a backpack. Also go with a backpack if you have more stuff to carry than just books and notebooks. Backpacks are also nice if you toss you bag around a lot. Like if you cram it into a locker, or stuff it under a bus seat, or lay it on the snowy ground. You may not want to abuse a nice tote the way you could a backpack, and backpacks zip up to contain all your stuff if you travel with it a lot.

A backpack is better for your back. When using a backpack, use both straps of the backpack, so the weight will be evenly distributed.
