What is better for football sprints or long distance?

Ok so I'm in high school right now and have started pre-season for track right now and so far I have been doing long distance. We do 3 miles monday, wednesdays and fridays, and 5-6 miles tuesdays and thursdays. I'm not sure what the sprinters do, but I hear that there not to hard of practices. Lots of people say that the long distance runners have a harder workout than what the sprinters do, but I'm not sure what is better for football? What do you think I should do?
