What is a solid older model brand besides Honda or Toyota?

I'm shopping for a Used Car (dealership or private seller) in the $8,500 range. I was going to buy a Honda(Civic/CR-V) or Toyota(Camry/Corolla) but with high gas prices both of these brands have an obnoxious mark up. What other brands have older models that are worth buying or at least comparable to either Honda or Toyota? Thanks.

For buying second hand, you want a good brand that makes excellent engines. Honda does that for you, look around for a used Civic. They are pretty damn good!

Either that or a used Fit, excellent little runner.

Hyundia or Kia or Nissan(Datsun). My older VW diesel driven moderately got 75MPG and needed nothing but an oil change once a year.

We own an 04 Chev Impala with the smaller v6. When driven moderately it consistently gets over 30 mpg, with about 2/3 highway, 1/3 city. In the 4 years and 45k miles, we have owned it, it has needed no repairs, the only expense was for oil changes. We have owned Toyota's, Honda's, Nissan's and none have done the job as perfectly as this Chevy has. An 04 should be in the price range you are seeking if bought from a private owner.
