For example the overall wattage of the speakers and sub put together is lower than the wattage of the receiver? Or as close to equal to as possible? Somebody told me that under powering a speaker damages it more than over powering, true or false?

The HU power rating doesn't really mean much. That 50x4 on the front it peak, RMS is more like 15-22. When running amps the HU power isn't even used. Run your subs and other speakers off amps, and you will have alot better sound. Subs should be ran off an amp anyway, as a HU doesn't put out enough power to push a sub. You do not add the HU power and amp power together. The amp's RMS power rating should be close to the speaker's (or sub's) RMS rating- within 10%, + or -. Under powering a driver of any kind can only damage it when you have distortion.

I believe that if you under power a speaker it can heat up more because more energy goes into producing heat than sound. Also more power goes back into receiver.
