Generally, 'politics' in a workplace means that the environment is all about who you know, not how well you do your job. So, you can go in and do a good job, but if one of the boss' friends doesn't like you, you may get a poor review, etc. While, the boss' friend can do a poor job and get a good review and a raise.
I would talk to a couple of the employees in a workplace before you hire on there, just to get a feel for how the boss handles reviews, etc.
