What is a mercenary? What is a typical mercenary lifestyle? And how do you become one?

Would someone please tell me about mercenaries please. I would like to find out a good bit about them. Such as what are some of the skill required? Do you actually kill people? Where are a lot of located and where do they live? What are some of their living conditions? Would somebody please tell me everything i want to know or a least what they know.
 
1) Someone who gets shot at for money.

2)Getting shot at. And getting screwed out of your money.
