What is a good workout plan to prepare to hike the Appalachian trail?

Several friends and I are planning to hike the Appalachian trail the year after we graduate. We have three years to prepare, and we will put it off longer if we don't feel ready, but what can we do to be physically prepared? In my case, I am working on improving my running, am accustomed to martial arts, and when hanging around with friends tend to start games of soccer, volleyball, badmitton, etc. Basically, I'm fairly active. I also hike with my family every summer. Any advice?
