What is a good way to get a hold of an author?

I really want to write a letter of gratitude to an author that has changed my life, but I am not sure where to start.

If the author has a website, that should have details of where to send fan letters. I imagine you would have to write to his publisher or his agent. You just put the author's name on the envelope, followed by "c/o" (care of) and the name and address of the publisher or agent. They know what it means :-)

The only time I sent a letter to an author, I wrote to him care of his publisher. I imagine they held on to the letters and bundled them up once a week or once a month to forward them on to him.

You should expect to wait some time before receiving a reply, if you receive one at all. Don't be disheartened if the reply starts with "Unfortunately, I cannot reply to all letters individually..." If the author is popular, he probably gets hundreds of letters every week. If he replied to all of them, he'd have no time left for writing books.

If this is a famous author like Stephen King or Stephenie Meyer then they have a millions of fans and it might be harder for your letter to get through, for instance, they might not read every fan letter.

If it's a lesser-known author then you just go to his/her website and see if there's an e-mail link and then e-mail them. Many authors answer their fan mail, or at least read them.
