Bob Kaufman was the youngest of thirteen children, was born on April 18, 1925, and was the son of a German Orthodox Jew and a Black woman from Martinique. As a child, his mother made sure he attended Catholic mass, but he would also join his father in the synagogue on the sabbath. He also learned about voodoo beliefs from his grandmother. At 13, he boarded a ship and sailed with the U.S Merchant Marines for 20 years. During one of the trips to Greenland, Kaufman suffered from frostbite, causing him to lose 40% of his hearing.
