What is a good (not too esxpensive) bike for riding on trails?

I need to buy a bike to start riding on trails. It doesn't have to be a special bike. But what is a good bike just for trail and road riding?
 
You can get a wide variety of inexpensive mountain bikes at Wal-mart, Target, K-Mart, etc. You can get a decent one for around $100-$300. If you would settle for a used one, I found a $1200 mountain bike at Good Will for $20. Try Good Will, Salvation Army, etc.
