what is a good Messenger to video chat on?

i chat with my mom on yahoo instant messanger and for some reason her screen freezes a lot and i cant see her. what is a better instant messanger to use??
now that ive downloaded skype i cant see my mom and she cant hear me.. how can i fix the problem
