looking for an auto focus. I have a AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. But it does not auto focus with my camera (comera does not have a motor in it and needs a lens with a motor to auto focus). And in the setting I shoot in theres no way I can take good photos with a manual focus lens.

sorry for repeating myself.

If you are doing available light, hand held photography I would recommend the Nikon 50mm AF-S F/1.4. It will work on a D40x.

Very good low light lens for handheld work.

(The AF-S NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G might work, however, I am not fond of zooms, do not believe in investing that kind of money in DX glass and it is much slower than the F/1.4.)
