There are a couple, the Garmin Rino has a 2-way radio so you can talk to your friends. It has a GPS an you can send your location to your friends also. Its rugged and waterproof also.

"The FCC has granted Garmin a waiver that allows the Rino products to send position data on GMRS channels. As you can imagine, this feature can be a real lifesaver in an emergency, but it’s also handy anytime you need to round up family and friends at an amusement park or other outdoor activity. And, because Rino is a standard FRS/GMRS radio, you can use it to communicate with any other conventional FRS/GMRS radio around."

Then there is the Garmin Colorado hand-held, it has topographical maps, compass, altimeter, barometric altimeter, 3-d views of your location.

"Colorado 400i has a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even while you're standing still, and its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

Conveniently plug in optional preloaded SD cards for all your outdoor activities on land or water. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and Colorado provides turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Add select topographic maps to take advantage of Colorado's 3-D map view which gives you a better perspective of your elevation. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you don't have to worry about getting it wet."

Its a good little unit it just doesn't have the 2-way radio.

I like to go camping and hiking in the desert and want to get a gps so I don't get lost hiking in the desert.

I would recommend the Garmin GPS60CSx. I have one as the third GPS receiver after having a Magellan 10 years ago and then A Garmin
GPS II+ for eight years.

I'm fully satisfied with my newest receiver also under the most unfavorable conditions - I own it now for 21 months
