I have about a 90 lb male lab mix dog. He loves to go hiking but I don't know which backpack to get or where to get it. If anyone knows some good brands of dog backpacks that would be great. Also, how do I know if the backpack fits correctly? I heard the pack was supposed to go on their shoulders, not their backs. thanks

Yes, any pack should idealy sit more on the shoulders than putting pressure on the back, but you also shouldn't put much weight in it either.

I have always liked most of what outward hound makes. You can get that brand at PetSmart. (which is nice b/c you can take the dog into the store and try it on right then and there for a good fit.

Ruff Wear makes the best in my opinion. We've been through 3 different brands with our dog (a 4 year old golden mix that weighs 65 pounds), and this brand is by far the highest quality and best fitting. Plus, they come loaded with useful features like a leash clip and a harness handle. Oh, and my favorite is the removable side bags so you can use it as a traditional harness! Too cool. Their website is www.ruffwear.com. They have a lot of great information about how to ensure that you've got the sizing correct.

I like the Mountainsmith dog pack that we have for our lab. She is 70 pounds but the company I got it from has different sizes and brands.

She hardly knows she has anything on her back.

I believe the company has sales going on now and they also have reviews on their website. The reviews helped me to choose the Mountainsmith. They also show pictures of how each pack fits your dog.

Good luck and have fun hiking with your dog.

Try Ruffwear's Palisades Pack. It is designed to fit over the shoulders and has internal water bladders and compression straps.

I have a pit mix I run in this pack. It can run miles at a time without readjusting it, or without it's straps rubbing my girl raw. Note that the Palisades is a newer pack than the Palisades II. Both are very nice.
