What is a good combination of tropical/semi-aggressive fish for an aquarium?

My boyfriend and I have between a 40-50 gallon aquarium which currently contains no fish. We have browsed at the pet store and talked about several options. We both liked the ghost catfish and my boyfriend especially liked alot of the semi-aggressive fish. We were looking for ideas on a good combination of fish for our fish tank either tropical or semi-aggressive.
 
i like the peaceful communites but a good semi agressive tank would be some tiger barbs, a little rainbow shark, a pictus catfish, a plecocostomus, and a rafel cat. a peaceful combo could be agel fish, cory cats, dannios, larger neon tetras, and gohst shrimp.
