What is a good camera for taking professional like portrait pictures?

I am interested in taking professional portrait pictures. Can anyone recommend a camera? I am willing to spend $$$
 
Canon EOS digital range. All good. Don't rely on the onboard flash though, that's rubbish.

Best flash is the Canon 580 EX II
