I have been searching for a book like this since the TV show "Bones" sparked an interest in anthropology. I am fascinated by evolutionary and tribal left overs influencing modern culture. For example, sports were developed to prepare boys for war. I believe the study of these things is called "cultural anthropology," but all my searches turn up is textbooks. I want an entertaining read for a layman.

I'm glad you asked. Here are some books I've read that may be in the realm you are looking for:

The Origins of Virtue: Human Instincts and The Evolution of Cooperation - Matt Ridley

The Science of Good & Evil: Why People Cheat, Gossip, Care, Share, And Follow The Golden Rule - Michael Shermer

The Moral Animal: Why We Are the Way We are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology - Robert Wright

The Mating Mind: How Sexual Choice Shaped The Evolution of Human Nature - Geoffrey Miller

How We Believe: Science, Skepticism, and The Search For God - Michael Shermer

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates Of Human Societies - Jared Diamond

Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and other Confusions of Our Time - Michael Shermer (I just really like this guy)

any book by jared diamond. The guy is an anthropology/evolutionary genius. Also, check Margaret Atwood for fictition. She really knows how to exploit human psych and behavioral problems, etc. in her works of fiction.
