what is a good book for a 16 year old girl by an american author?

i need to read a book for school by an american author. it can either be fiction or non-fiction but it can't be like fantasy or science fiction. i prefer fiction though. also were supposed to read an author who has more than one book out so we can read many books from this one author. any suggestions would be great! thank youuu (:
 
I absolutely loved reading To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.It's a fictional story, but very believable. It's all about prejudice, but written through a child's innocent perspective.
