What is a good bike these days?

Some di-ckless piece of sh-it stole my beloved TREK 830 a couple weeks ago. I've had that bike for 15 years and it was awesome for my needs... Occasional long distance, muddy trails, city commuting.

So what's good now? I want suspension, good handling around heavy roots and mud, but comfortable enough for 30 mile rides. What do you all suggest?

(P.S. I refuse to buy a bike from Wal-Mart or Target...)

There are so many great bikes out there that dont cost tons of money.
Trek, Giant, Specialized all those brands make totally awesome bikes in all price ranges.
Sucks about your bike dude. I feel your pain I had a bike stolen awhile ago. Dont you just want to find that pos and just beat his face in. I certainly did.

Man I loved my trek 820 too. It was like $300 and I can't tell much difference in my $800 specialized hardtail. If you really loved that bike get another one just like it. The new trek 820's are actually not to bad and are only like $300. If you wanna spend a little more money look into like specialized hardrock or a giant yukon. They have disc brakes and are great bikes.
