What is a good author and genre for me to read?

I used to read tons of Sci-Fi books as a child. I spent the last two years reading hundreds of Westerns. I am tired of reading about space aliens and gun slingers at the moment. What other books might I enjoy?

I do enjoy action, but it has to be realistic. I hate books that waste time getting anywhere.

I am thinking about mystery or detective type books. Are there any books that are like the shows Monk or Psych?

Any ideas?
 
Agatha Christie books have quite a bit of the humour of Monk (I haven't seen Psych) and the mysteries themselves are generally more challenging. Start out with a Poirot book if you like Monk - they're both finicky! I'd suggest Murder on the Orient Express, Sad Cypress or Death on the Nile as good ones to start with.

He gets knocked a lot, but a lot of John Grisham's stuff is pacey and a darn fun read (so it's not great lit, who cares?). The Firm, The Pelican Brief and The Runaway Jury are three I particularly enjoyed.
 
Dan Brown, Karin Slaughter and John Grisham. There's a series that Karin Slaughter wrote and I never saw the ending coming in a week of sundays.
 
Well Fantasy is a great genre and here are some recommendations:

- Kate Mosse wrote two books that are archaeological mysteries, but also kind of fantasy. They're called Labyrinth and Sepulchure and they each alternate between two different time periods - they're great.
