What is a desalination plant and what is it's purpose?

i'm not quite sure how to explain what a desalination plant is;
i do know what it is. But how can i explain it for a science assignment?

It is basically a plant that evaporates sea water, catches the resulting steam and condenses it back to fresh water leaving the salt as a waste product.
 
A desalinization plant is basically a plant that distills saltwater/seawater into "potable" or fresh water (the water you can drink, cook with, etc). The other product is brine, which is a bit more difficult to deal with than people realize.
