What is a co-operative business?? what are examples?

i am doing a project on co-operative business, and i don't really fully understand the concept. it's a business where the employee's run and own the company. they own shares of the company, and they use the goods/ services it provides. is that it?
then if they are the employees, then how do they have the time to use the services and goods it provides?
and what are some examples??
