What is a better value a 2003 Ford Focus, or a Volkswagen Jetta 2002?

i'm trying to shop for a used car and i so far the best two deals that i've found are

Ford Focus : 2003, 100k miles, 3,000.
VW Jetta, 2002, 120K miles, 3,500

the Jetta is luxury edition very nice automatic and looked good drove well
the Ford was not automatic and drove a little better than the Jetta

my question is which one would be a better value i know Fords break down often but they are cheap to repair whereas a Jetta would cost a lot of money to repair if anything went wrong.

please let me know which one you would pick.

i'd recommend getting a new one cause it'll have a warranty,
anyways, I'd pick the jetta.. Nothing beats the german cars.. It might cost more to fix but it wont break down as much as the ford focus considering that both of them are used. Plus jetta has better options.. Good luck.. =)
 
Contrary to the first answer I have never known someone that bought a Jetta that old and did not have a bunch of problems with it. If it was a very nice reliable car in great shape it would cost more than $3,500.

The Jetta will probably have the same amount of issues as the Ford and the Ford will be A LOT cheaper to fix. If the Ford seems to be in better condition it will definately cost you less in the long run.
