What inverts or fish do I need to have in my fish tank to really clean it?

shrimp, crabs, crayfish are all scavengers and will readily clean up any left over food particles. Snails will eat your algae but produce as much waste as fish. Plecos get big and regular algae eaters will keep the glass clean but are still fish and still pee and poop. Live plants will help lower your nitrates after waste material is converted but in the end you still need to do water changes and vacuum your gravel.

The Almighty Amano shrimp! This little bugger adds very little to the bioload and will have your tank spotless in no time. Just make sure your water parameters are roughly in line with the recommendations. I don't recommend crayfish because, well, if you want to annihilate everything in a planted tank within a week, add a crayfish. Crabs, or at least the RCCs and vampires I've kept, ate zero algae. HTH!

You might need to get a few and not all of them will eat everything. Certain fish eat certain dirt. You could get a few snails, algae eaters, and you still have to do basic cleaning...but not as much.

Good luck.
