what impact do manufactured boards have on the environment?

manufactured boards aren't bad for the environment.
They made from old wood chipping/ saw dust, so they are almost "recycled" boards.
They are bonded together, but this is totally biodegradable unlike the first answer.

no deforestation caused directly from them.
can be recycled themselves.
 
I do not believe it is the boards themselves, but rather the coatings which are used on them. Many contain polyurethanes or other similar polymeric coatings. These chemicals do not break down for many years in the environment. See link. Best of luck to you.
