"We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.”
Viktor Frankl

I watched a special on Auschwitz and during it they interviewed some survivors of that camp. One Jewish woman said that many did terrible things to stay alive and that staying alive was all you could think about. The picture all of this presented was horrific and even so I'm sure I don't even come close to understanding what happened to these people. But amidst all the horror, I'm sure there were a few that kept their dignity and died like they would have like to have lived. But in this DVD. . .available on Netflix. . .there was this man who was gathered up with his family and neighbors and taken to this camp. Not only did they gas at Auschwitz but there were little houses away from the camp and this one particular one had the train tracks right up to the door so that they could really just get rid of people quickly. This man was given the job of gassing and you did it or they just shot you and got someone else who wanted to live to do it. After the people were gassed they had to take them out to the trenches they had dug in a field next to the house. They also interviewed a German lady with a house down the street and she said it was horrible, you couldn't leave your windows open because of the stench of the rotting bodies. So the Nazi's had this man and others dig up the rotting corpses. . .and remember that his wife and kids were probably in there as well as his neighbors. . .and they put these rotting bodies in a big pile and burned them. I don't think I have the right to say anything about anyone that survived those camps. It would be very hard to decide to die with grace than fight to survive.
I had nightmares from this DVD set even though I have done a lot of reading on the Nazi's. I doubt I shall ever forget it. I highly recommend it. . .Auschwitz. It will give you some images.

Very horrifying images--people huddled with scared, sad, eyes. Hungry and cold. Fearful. Being crammed into tiny boxcars with cattle, men, women children, infants. Being whipped, raped, robbed, and tormented.
