What if the Yankees of the 40's and 50s had a GM other than the stingy George Weiss

(Read On)? Weiss was known as one of the toughest negotiators come contract time. During that same time the Yanks held off rallies every yr from the Red Sox

Those Boston teams of Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Vern Stephens, Mel Parnell, Dominic DiMaggio, Birdie Tibbets under Joe McCarthy came extremly close yr after yr

49 especially when the Sox needing 1 win in their final 2 vs. NY at Fenway blew the pennant

Several Yankees from those teams have said those Sox teams may've been better

One former player (I believe Allie Reynolds or Tommy Heinrich maybe Charlie Keller) told Pesky that the reason for their sucsess was a need for the bonuses they got for winning the pennant. The player noted the Sox were paid well by Tom Yawkey and they didn't need the bonuses like NY.

Well both team obviously played 100% was the needef or the extra money the little that pushed the Yankees. If the Yanks had a GM/Owner like Yawkey or even one less stingy would they have won as many pennants (Assuming of course they were equally as good in every other level or Weiss' job?)
Yeah I read Summer of 49 a few wks ago. I was thinking though how good those Sox teams were and how close they camefor a 5yr stretch 46-50. McCarthy losing it, Doerr's retirement and William's going to Korea killed it though
Yeah. What's ridicoulos the scouting report son Mays was. It was surprising though b/c Yawkey was the biggot not the scouts

Also even McCarthy pitching Denny Galehouse in the 1gm playoff vs.Cleveland w/PARNELL avaliable. Galehouse also had pitched 6 innings warming up in the pen the gm before
Also
Also Richardson's lucky 3 base double
3 run not 3 base. LOL
I know although Stephens and Pesky turned out good but can you imagine all the good players they blew. Look at that potential lineup

RF Dominic DiMaggio
SS Pee Wee Reese
CF Willie Mays
LF Ted Williams
1B Vern Stephens
2B Bobby Doerr
C Birdie Tibbets
SS Johnny Pesky

(I'm assuming we could switch Stephens to 1st and Mays pushed Dom to right)
Yeah you get Great D and pop. They'd win the pennant every yr
Plus what if they had hung on to Rudy York. Why they released him I'll never know. His average was down to .212 but he still had power, his d was fine and he was on pace for 90 rbis. He never was a good average player either (.233 in 46)

Imagine that lineup and Rudy York on the bench

Read the Summer of '49 recently?

Agreed, what really hurt them is the injuries. If either Tex or Ferris woulda stayed healthy they would've won the pennant in both 48 and 49 and probably 50. Sucks also about the opportunity with Mays in CF and Williams in LF. It's a shame Williams only gotta show his amazing talents in one WS. No doubt he was the best player of that era.

Yeah McCarthy fucked that one up, and also that blown call on the HR earlier in the year against Cleveland. They caught a lot of bad breaks during that run, and another I remember is about trading Pee Wee Reese cause Cronin didn't want to lose his spot.

Yeah that lineup look goods They'd basically have two great defensive CFers in the OF which could make up for Teds below average defense (though his career OPS+ of 191 does that by itself). Hell, according to FRAA (fielding runs above average) Dom was actually a better fielder than his overrated brother.
