What if I never pay my cellphone contract termination fee? (Verizon)?

So, within one month I'm moving out of the country and living on the other side of the planet.
My contract has another year left to it, and Customer Service says that if I cancel I'll be liable for a hefty termination fee.
If I refuse to pay up, can they do anything to me from half a world away? What happens if I return temporarily? Can I get service from a rival carrier still? Do I really have any incentive to pay up?
