Such as McCain lost to GW Bush who then chose 5 deferment Cheney due to the neocom take over of the Republican party.

umm isn't that what happened? now he's a war hero, back then he was too liberal for a republican.
 
Same thing that happened when a white hero with decades of experience, who lost the 1992 election to a draft dodger and a son of wealthy Senator, who got him out of serving on the ground.
 
The John McCain of 2000 and now of 2009 would have made a far better president than George W. Bush.
