What if a new Sam and Max cartoon were made today?

Some time ago, I posted on the "This Should Come To Adult Swim Suggestions/Predictions Thread" suggesting that a Sam and Max series be made for the Adult Swim network, which can be found here:

I personally thought a Sam and Max series was long overdue, and I agree with Ed Liu in his review of the "Sam and Max: Freelance Police" DVD (hint, hint!).

But what do you think? If Sam and Max returned to television, what network should it be on? Should it remain the kid-friendly series it was in the past, or is it time to "grow up"? Who should voice the duo? What rating should it have? Should the duo swear? (Should they swear even more than they usually do?)

Feel free to post your thoughts here.

Swearing =/= maturity or entertainment.

But to answer the question: sure I'd like to see a new Sam & Max series. I don't think it needs to become "adult" per se, it could easily follow in the vein of the Fox series, but air it at night so the writers could push the envelope just a tad further, but not to ludicrous extremes.

As for voices, having been reared on the Fox episodes, I've come to accept Harvey Atkin and Robert Tinkler as THE voices for Sam & Max. Whenever I read one of the books, those are the voices I hear.

If a new Sam and Max series were to be made, I hope they add Bosco and Sybil into it. Noone can say no to a paranoid store clerk and a woman who keeps changing her occupation.

A new TV cartoon wouldn't work. BS&P for all channels has become so skittish that Sam and Max would even be able to SAY the word "gun", let alone brandish one. Plus the flamethrowers, bazookas and other weapons the FOX cartoon replaced the guns with would also likely be verboten.

A web-only series would be great, however.

Now that the episodic games are going on, it doesn't seem as necessary as it once did. It certainly won't happen until the games end; Steve Purcell is busy enough as it is. But even then, I feel like the franchise may have run its course at that point. Certainly not a bad note to go out on.

But perhaps a movie?

The games are pretty much interactive cartoons already; but if one was made, they'd definately need to have Bosco and Sybil in it since they add a lot to the comedy of the series. I'd also want them to have the same voices from the Telltale games. As for the 'adult' thing, Sam & Max's humor doesn't come from that.. in fact they don't swear all that often (in the games, anyway, aside from Jimmy's son who has tourettes and such) The humor stems from the rapid fire dialog exchanges and extremely dry sense of humor with Sam and Max's respective quips and manneirsms. The old Fox cartoon managed to capture that, for the most part, even without the 'adult' subjects.

Yeah, at least that'll avoid some of cuts because of guns and all. Also a direct-to-video distribution could be interesting possibility.

Okay, you're probably going to hate me for reviving a dead thread, but I've started a Facebook group called "Sam and Max On Adult Swim" (also known as "S.A.M.O.A.S."). I could use some members!

As for animation, I think a company called Lightsource Studios would handle it very nicely. They've already done Sam and Max Flash animation before (although it's very short and there's no voice acting)...
