What if a military officer is drunk?

If a commanding officer is drunk, are you still supposed to obey his/her orders? What if the orders end up being a bit ridiculous? i was just curious

Are we just thinking up insane stuff to ask? Anyway about the only two people in a command who might and I mean might be able to call the CO on being drunk would be:

Possibly the XO...and that depends on the circumstances...but the rest of the command probably wouldn't find out.

Maybe second would be the Command Sergeant Major (Army) or Command Master Chief Petty Officer (Navy). I am betting on the senior enlisted getting away with it quicker than the XO...but even that is dangerous territory.

I don't think anyone else would try to argue with the CO. That would be too hard to prove. As far as ridiculous orders...well, plenty of sober CO's are quite capable of issuing those. I have seen many ridiculous orders from the CO and it made you wonder if he (she ) was sober or not....but you grin and bear it and say "Yes, Sir/Ma'am" and carry on.

Technicaly, no. An order from an drunk officer would be considered an illegal order. But you have to be able to prove he was drunk at a court marshal. You would need a blood alchol test from a hospital and several witnesses.

It is supposed to work this way....

Since the CO is under the influence he/she is not of sound judgment, therefor you can refuse his orders.

With that being said, If the CO were to reprimand you for refusing Orders you would request Mast and you would tell your story and the proof would be on you.

I would be very careful with a situation like this.

Most ( and I say MOST) of the time you will not see this CO in a not so lighted situation.

The poster above me is correct in one area about CO's who are not drunk that you would be ?ing becasue of the Orders they give.

Probably a no win situation.

Yes Sir/Ma'am
