I completely agree, i stuck with a 'proper' phone with buttons for ages until i got a Desire last month. i was adamant that my fingers were too big for a touch screen keypad and so i got the desire for the landscape keyboard option. but after using it for about a day i started using the smaller portrait view keyboard and it is brilliant. also with the auto word correct i can mash the keypad and it still somehow finds the right word!
