what happens if you go to court without a lawyer?

My ex was arrested on a warrant. She filed out the paperwork to get a court appointed attourney but was denied one. She has court tomorrow. She contacted some lawyers and they wanted 500 dollars for the retainer and she does not have it. What whill happen when she goes to court tomorrow without the lawyer. She was charged with domestic assault.
 
She will lose without an attorney.

She needs to tell the Court that she wants an Attorney but has been unable to get one.
 
The judge will determine if she can represent herself, if she isn't able to then she will have to try to get a public defender again or try to work a deal with a lawyer.
