what happens if you get an iphone password wrong?

a friend of mine found a iphone a month ago. i was just wondering, what will happen if you guess the password wrong so many times?
will the personal information erase?
can he use the phone?
 
what happens is if you get it wrong a couple of times in a row, it locks up for 15 or so minutes.

so if it locks up for 15 minutes every five time you enter the password wrong, the maximum time it could be locked for is 21 days.

it just grab the SIM card and plug it into your itunes and see what happens.
