What happens after boot camp?

My husband just graduated Navy Boot camp this past weekend. Now he's headed for A school over there in Great Lakes. He wants to apply for housing and move me out there, how possible is that? Does that usually happen? Do they get time off for Christmas or anything like that? We also have a baby on the way, could he be around for that as well? Would he get leave? Has anyone been through this before?
He'll be in A school from Nov. 9th-Jul.29th. So it'll be more than 6 months I believe. If he gets housing, it'll be on base right? If so, would I see him much?

Let's break it down:

1. Chances are very good he'll get leave for the Christmas holiday. Pretty much every branch of the service shuts down their AIT/A-School/MOS-Tech Training for at least a week around Christmas. No guarantees of course, but I'd be very surprised if your husband was required to stay at Great Lakes over the Christmas holiday.

2. Your husband's commanding officer has the final say as to whether he can live outside the barracks and move you out to the Great Lakes area. A lot depends on how long he'll be there for A-School. If he'll be there longer than four months, he has a better chance of getting his request approved. If the CO approves your husband's request and there is housing available on-base, you move right in and all you pay for is phone, cable, and Internet. If the CO approves your husband's request and on-base housing is not available, he'll get BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and you'll have to rent an apartment, condo, or house off-base.

3. The bad news is your husband will not get time off from A-School when you have your baby. Hopefully you'll be able to live together on or near Great Lakes, but if not I can pretty much chisel it in stone for you that you'll be having the baby by yourself and your hubby won't get to see your baby until he's done with A-School, unless you can swing a weekend visit or something.

Unless his A-school is over 6 months that will be a NO GO. He will live in the barracks. If however he is goingto be stationed at Great Lakes...MAYBE he can apply for housing...
