What happened to the Army Academies?

I have noticed that the Universities that were always referred to as being particular to the Army, are now called "Military" Academies (i.e. West Point Military Academy, The Citadel Military Academy). Why is that? And why do the Air Force and Navy Schools retain specific branch affiliations?
