What happened to good gangster films?

I want a good western to be made. Havent seen one in ages.
The best gangster film for me is GoodFellas. Am waiting for the special edition DVD to come out.

The Untouchables - last film with a decent throwback to the classics. Everything since then has been either Tarantino (though Jackie Brown was fine - he should have got off the gravy train there ) -, or Italiano, the best being Innocent Blood, which showed the 'boy gang with guns' thing as somewhat pathetic when confronted with a vampire

ive never really been into gangsta films set in the past like good fellas although i don't mind them. i'm not sure whythere haven't been many made recently.

Its not fair
I will have to make one myself, I guess it is pretty hard to come up with a different angle / storyline. Oh well, anyone want to star, I already have Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael MaRABen, Chris Penn and Ed Norton as the token schizophrenic mad dood :p

Latest Gangster films have the problem of being too English 'mockney'. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Sexy Beast and Love, Honor and Obey all suffer the same effect :( Still, there are plenty of classics out there to be had if you look hard enough :)

Hehe - I really enjoy the 'mockney' films, wouldn't mind if they done more of them, but there is still a BIG gap to fill where those serious, wonderfully crafted gangster tales used to be

Miller's Crossing and Road to Perdition are both excellent period gangster films. Road to Perdition is only a couple of years old too.
