What happened to car audio?

I've been dying to ask this question, forgive me if I offend any "New-School" enthusiast, but.... What ever happened to car audio. Yes, I am a fan of Old school. Nevertheless, I can appreciate the advancements that new school technology has brought about.

BUT...

I've seen&heard new school amps that claim to put out 700 watts, or 900 watts, or 1,200watts RMS. And when I compare them to Old school amps that claim between 200-800 watts rms, HONESTLY... I'm not impressed :-(

Now don't get me wrong there is a big difference between old school 600watts and a new school 1800watt D-class MONSTER. But when I take an old school 500watt rms amp and compare it to a new school 500watt rms amp... there's no comparrison, old school wins hands down!!! {granted some old amps were underrated but, not to an extent to where it should be this obvious}
AND, I've read that old, class A/B amps were only 60% to 78% efficient. So, atleast 30% of its power is lost to heat or whatever else.
*So, how can a old amp, 500watts (60%efficient) "out-shine" a new amp which is also 500watts and is (80-95% efficient)? Explain this.

Are watts measure differently now veresus 12-15 years ago???

It takes at least twice the power to notice a difference right???

Any & All opinions are welcome...
