What happened at the Battle of hastings? I WILL choose a best answer!?

I really need someone to tell me what happened. I have heard different things and I have a test coming up in history and I need to know the truth. Also, if you could tell me why there was a battle (I know it was something about harold being crowned the new king and edward declared war) that would be so greatly appreciated.

One more note: Harold had just fought the vikings in the north part of the island when he heard that William was invading. He had marched his army north at double time to fight the viking army that was planning to take over england, to fight the normans.
So he and his army were very tired. Not that they would have won anyway. That arrow in the eye pretty much ended his right to be king!
