What goes on at Military Christmas parties?

So I'm going with my husband to his Command Christmas party (Navy). It'll be the first one for both of us. The dress is semi-formal. It's at a nice hotel. What happens at these parties? Is it just cocktails, or is it dinner? Is there dancing? It's next week I'm getting anxious I kinda just wanna have an idea of what generally goes on :) Thanks!
 
Semi-formal? There is no such thing except in junior-high school when they want you to wear at least a sport coat. On any invitation they should say whether there is dinner. Look at the bottom of the invitation. It should say "Dancing to follow." Or in the worst case scenario ask someone.

Most scheduled parties in the military are dress uniform (or mess dress or evening dress) for the service member. Unless it is formal women will wear cocktail dresses.
