This is not always the case but males usually have long fins and are the most common and females have short fins. I hope you have a 5+ gallon heated and filtered aquarium and not a cruel bowl.
More than likely it's a male. Was in a container by it's self when you bought it? If it was it's a male. If it was mixed with other bettas , it's a female. Females can be mixed ,males can not.
Males will have loads of color and long, flowing fins. When you purchased it, they should of told you. Read this site.
