What exercise can I do to get rid of 'love handles'?

I exercise daily on a cross-trainer which shapes my legs well and tones my arms but I don't feel like it is giving me enough progress in the area of my 'love handles' (I really hate that term). I have a fairly thin waist though so I don't want the recommend exercise to thin that area of my body.

Also, I do not have any other exercise equipment. Could you please recommend exercises to do at home with no equipment or only household items. Thank you.
