What exactly to people mean by "Western" society and "Western" culture?

what makes something Western? Does it mean the west coast of the US?
Does Western mean the United States or the Western hemisphere or the Americas or anything west of the prime meridian or any 1st world country or any Christian country or WHAT?
What and where is "Western" and not Western? and Why?
Why is a certain place Western and another place non western? What do people mean by it?
I only seem to hear people from Europe refer to it as Western. Why is this?

i believe the western world is the U.S and Europe, i am from the east and that is what we we consider Western.
