What exactly is enlightenment?

I'm arguing about this w/ a friend. I say enlightenment is a state, he says it's a realization. However, I think a realization CAUSES/ALLOWS a state.

When light is seen around our head by others or when we get radiation or brightness in our face, it is an indication of enlightenment, I think.
