What exactly does the fish symbol that I see all over cars and billboards mean?

Are Christians changing from crucifixes to fishes?

What exactly does this fish represent.

This is a honest question I truly don't know...I wonder how many people that have a fish stuck on their car actually know where this came from also. My guess is that they put the fish on as others have,

It means the person in the car ahead of you doesn't care if they die, because it means they get to "go home to Jesus." I give fish-cars a wide berth.

It tends to say 'IXOYE' in the center, which is ancient Greek for 'fish'. I've spoken to enough Christers in my life who have no grasp of history that are under the impression it means 'Jesus'. It doesn't. It means 'fish'.

Anyway, it was a symbol by which early Christians identified each other, as they were living in a polytheistic society that probably would have had a problem with monotheists. Or maybe they wouldn't have. Hard to say: most of the history of that period was written or translated by monks.

Christians began using the Greek word for "fish" as an anagram/acronym for "Jesus Christ God's Son, Savior."
I Iota the first letter in the Greek word Iesous Jesus
X Chi the first letter in the Greek word Christos Christ
Q Theta the first letter in the Greek word Theos Of God
U Upsilon the first letter in the Greek word Yios (Huois) Son
S Sigma the first letter in the Greek word Soter Savior

It often represents Christianity, because it's somehow relevant to it (I forgot... check out the answers above me.)

But sometimes, it can read "DARWIN" in it -- representing that it is a believer of "evolution" -- and is most likely an Atheist.

the fish represents christianity. it comes from the fisha nd bread sotry in the bible (im pretty sure). its better than the cross, i think. people wear the cross without thinking about the meaning of it.

The fish is a symbolic reference to christ the fisherman, though we hear mainly of him being a carpenter. It is just more productive for christian organisations to use this reference for their own purpose as reminders of all the associated references toward "fish" miracles and the other mumbo jumbo in enumerous supply within the cover of their indoctrination pamphlet "the bible"!

A lot of Jesus' disciples were fishermen, notably Peter. During the time of Christian persecution by Rome, the Christians used that fish symbol as a "secret sign." Also, it looks like a Greek letter Alpha. The first part of Jesus' claim in the Revelation that he is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.
