The Islamic Empire actually got Europe out of the Dark Ages because when the Islamic Empire conquered Spain, they brought many great inventions, innovations, and art work with them such as textiles, which flourished in Europe. Also they brought many new mathematics theories that made Europe build on them, which caused Europe to begin to invent new science and mathematic theories and concepts causing them to begin the Renaissance.

The guy below me is thinking of the Byzantines, who are the Romans, just they are the Eastern Roman Empire who flourished, the Western Roman Empire crashed on itself.

A growing interest in the remains of Roman culture.

Europeans began trying to recreate Roman architecture, read Roman literature, used Latin as a universal language of learning. As their knowledge increased they became "humanists," concerned with increasing the knowledge, power and accomplishments of man on earth (as opposed to glorifying God in heaven).

And so on.

Yes, they picked up quite a bit from the Islamics as well.

Knowledge in printed form, the Gutenberg press. This allowed the people to obtain and learn, breaking the church and governments hold over the people.
