What else can be done instead of going to gear drive?

Going with the andrews or harley SE hyd. setup you also get the benefit of the new oil pump which has better scavenging characteristics and slightly higher oil pressure. It's not as sensitive to crank runnout either. Doesn't really seem to be a downside to using this approach for most of us.

I've been running and installing gear drive setups for years. As long as the crank runout is within spec, gear drive is fine... Pricey, but fine.

On my new 124, I'll be using late model roller chains (inside & out) with TMan cams setup like 07+ models on the outer end and 06 & older on the inners. There are several vendors offering popular grinds this way now (TMan, Andrews, Bob Wood). There are also place you can have late model cams "converted" to the hybrid style for the older bikes.

You can buy the conversion kit from Andrew, TMan, or Wood. You can also get the individual component p/n's from an 07+ parts manual and order them individually from your favorite online HD source, and them buy which ever cam grind floats your boat...

I just opened up the cam case on my 2000 RK w/50k on the ticker. The front shoe was probably < 50% wear but the rear was broken. I'm going with the Andrews N conversion with 26 cam from GMR.

You can get the HD set up for around 550 if you buy from an on line dealer that gives a 20% discount. That would get you the upgrade kit , SE adj pushrods and you have to buy a gasket kit to do the job but only need a couple parts out of it.
